Earnest Hemingway described the difficulty of the writing process as “facing the white bull.” Well, Larry David (writer/producer of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm for those of you who don’t enjoy laughing) describes his similar frustrations with the craft, but in that sort of cranky/hilarious way that has made him famous. Here’s his quote from a recent “History of Curb Your Enthusiasm” show that I caught on HBO:

The writing is…It’s so daunting and so, so hard. And when I even think about it, it makes me sick to my stomach to have to go into the office and do it. I’ll do anything not to do it. But then when the writing is over it’s a lot of fun. Because then the actual filming of the show is great, I have a great time, it’s a great life. If I could just somehow magically get that show written without my participating in it. That’s what I need to do.

Isn’t that amazing? This coming from one of the most successful and hilarious television writers in history!! It just goes to show you, that even if it looks like it comes naturally, or that it might seem as though someone has so much talent that they don’t have to work hard at the art of writing, that simply isn’t true. Writing is work. Even for the great ones, be it Hemingway or Larry David. No soup for you!

The Silversun Pickups were back in Los Angeles at The Greek Theater, and it was great to see them.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I had never been to a show at The Greek Theater until this past Friday night. What a great venue. It reminds me of a cross between a mini Hollywood Bowl, and the bar with all the trees outside the lobby at The Wynn in Vegas. Does that make sense to anyone but me? Debatable.

In any case, it’s cool that the first band I saw perform there was a band from L.A. The Silversun Pickups have a ton of great songs, they sound great live, and they seemed genuinely excited to be performing back in their hometown. Lead singer Brian Aubert described “glee coming out of their pores,” which sounds kinda gross. But he also reminisced about seeing shows at The Greek while growing up in Los Angeles, including a Radiohead performance where he couldn’t get a ticket and hid in the trees to get a glimpse. And now they’re the main attraction. That’s pretty sweet. It’s great to see people appreciate their success as it’s happening. Even though they didn’t play Three Seed – my personal favorite from their collection – it was still a great band in a great spot. Hope to see them both again before long.

The Dodgers have been playing pretty awful lately. “Imploding,” as my dad described their recent performance during their 3-game sweep at the hands of the Giants. But there’s still a lot of baseball left to be played, and their 9-0 victory on a picturesque evening in Los Angeles last night moves them 7 games behind the Padres with 54 games left to play. It’s a mountain to climb, but it’s not insurmountable.
